Did You Know? Some Fun and Interesting Food Facts

I was searching the web last week and found some very interesting facts about food and nutrition.  So, I thought this week we should share some of them with you…

  • Fresh Bananas have a natural chemical which can make a person feel happy.  The same chemical is also found in Prozac.
  • Pound per pound, hamburgers cost more than a new car.
  • You may be surprised to learn that Strawberries contain more vitamin C than oranges.
  • The toxic Puffer Fish  kills about 300 people per year,. The rest are cheating death. :)
  • The average person consumes 8-9 pounds of food additives a year.
  • There’s no truth to the rumor that SPAM contains hog lips or snouts.
  • The first choice of  the most craved food by pregnant women  is Nachos.
  • The best fast food meal for kids is Subway’s Veggie Delight Sub with apple slices.
  • The worst fast food meal for kids is Dairy Queen’s original Cheeseburger and Fries.
  • If it takes 12 ears of corn to make a tablespoon of corn oil, how much it does it take to make a whole bottle?
  • Coffee beans aren’t beans.  They’re fruit pits.
  • A peanut is not a nut, but it’s actually a legume.
  • In the US, 50% of pizzas sold are with pepperoni on them.
  • For all you scientists; if you took two forks and an electrical charge, a pickle will light up.
  • To judge if a watermelon is ripe, you should knock on it and if it sounds hollow, then it is ripe.

  • In the US, a pound of potato chips costs 2 hundred times more than a pound of potatoes.
  • Americans spent approximately $25 billion each year on beer.
  • Fortune cookies were invented in 1916 by George Jung, a Los Angeles noodle maker.
  • Capsaicin, which makes hot peppers “hot”, is best neutralized by casein, the main protein found in milk.
  • On an average, each American  eats 51 pounds of chocolate per year.
  • Chocolate contains a natural substance, phenyl ethylamine (PEA), which is reputed to stimulate the same reaction in the body as falling in love.

Hi Pam,  Enjoyed your list.  That figure of Americans' eating 51 pounds of chocolate annually sounds really high !  Is that correct ?  Yikes !

Wow, really interesting info Pamela!  A few are familiar but most I've never heard before, and definitely never knew dynamite had such a natural ingredient in it :)
