Hanging Out On Google+

Hanging out on Google+

Still wondering if google+ is somewhere you want to go?  There are so many social media venues it really is difficult to decide where to spend your time.  One thing you might want to consider is the fact that google is the 800 pound gorilla in the room so playing in their back yard and posting your links on their sites just could bring some extra juice to the SEO table.  Just some organic food/juice for thought!  I spent considerable time on the site this past week and find it very exciting.  I am talking to people globally and they are all willing to share and help since it is still in beta testing mode and we are all learning together.  As a hybrid between facebook and twitter I think you will find it fun and soon to be profitable there is an ease in sharing with people open to learning about what it is you have to offer.

Hangoutis the name of the feature where you can video chat with many people at once on google+.  The originator of the group invites people by e-mail or opens it to the public and it can be posted on your stream that you are in a hangout. You can discuss specific topics or just roll.

As you are reading this think about how you could talk with potential buyers or sellers about real estate in your market. Consider hosting a lender at your computer like a talk show guest to talk about new loan programs or even a HUD representative talking about the programs to save owners from foreclosure.  The topic list is endless so just open your mind and think VIRTUAL information where buyers and sellers can meet you in the comfort of their home or office.  They can read all about you on your google profile and connect with you all over cyberspace. Your guest speakers can be with you in person or on their own computer in their office.

July 18, 2011 I participated in a "hang out" for writers. We had people from Russia, Ireland, Pakistan, Boston University, Washington State and Germany.   We all were writing for about 50 minutes.  It was fun to hear the clicking of the keys as everyone was madly writing then after 50 minutes we opened the mic and talked to one another.  During the work time the chat room was open so you could chat with anyone who just wanted to instant message.  Below is a screen shot of what hangout looks like.  The chat room is on the left and the video in the center.  At the bottom you can see the people that were in the hangout room.  On the right you can see my google+ stream.

Google+ screen shot

To get started in the hangout room you have to install google voice and video chat on your computer and you are all set to go!  This video shows how simple it is.

Google Talk

Start chatting right from Gmail or iGoogle

Check out all the hangouts taking place at any given time.  Just click on the link and once you have installed your google voice you can jump right in and participate.

Google+ Hangouts

As a "vintage player" I was respectful of the conversation and tried not to be disruptive.  I turned off my video to see about taking a screen shot on my new imac thinking I had turned off the sound too... lesson #1 mute the mic if you are going to talk outside of the chat room they could not see me but they heard me...  yikes learning curve! There is a video mute and a mic mute!

Enjoy some of our fun engagement that took place in the course of about 15 minutes.

Thank you to Rebecca Blain, who is a contract writer and set this up to encourage people to write.

Talking about writers in general and their persona's.

"I don't agree with alcoholism but I love Hemingway."

Cleo Lomaxblogger, mother and writer had her baby in a swing sleeping and her son sleeping in her lap as you can see in the first screen shot. She was able to connect with the virtual world while watching her kids and engaging with other writers... WE got to see her in her living room and she really shared some great insight as to other writings being discussed like Twilight and Harry Potter.

"What ever I read influences my writing so I try to keep my reading on the same vein as my writing."

Game of Thornes   "Not the best thing to do unless you want to kill all your characters "

Moshin.. writes on political topics... Pakistan.

We all got an invite to the youtube you can all watch the video with Tim getting a masters degree in music education.  He was to do an interpretation of this video.

Monica had her light saver from her profile photo and showed it to us as her profile picture is dark

Felix from Ireland said:  "This is like work watching everyone write then discussing things."  Felix is customer support for gaming industry at Big Fish Games!  He wanted no favors for Big Fish Game requests!

Book character discussion led to:

Be tolerant of loss... as soon as you meet a character be prepared to die.  Plot development.. this is like a writing class with the people sharing their writing journey.

Monica has a boyfriend who is writing a book on bird sounds.... he has a visual representation of the sound.... he takes the audio and converts it to print. My comments were "why wouldn't he do an e-book with the sounds as an audio link so people "birders" can listen?"

The answer was.... the scientific community processes through print and the project is complicated..

An idea arose from the concept of audio waves for Felix from Ireland a science fiction writer... he says:

"How cool is that... navigating through space on bird vibes."

You read it here first.

Do you see how creative you can get with the hangouts.  The perfect place to brain storm with people from across the world.   We had theme ideas flowing and input on music enlisting the brain power of friends at google+.

What about a press conference on a hang out at google+ share the breaking news and events from your office?

Celebrities are doing it!  You should too!

Mark Hoppus from Blink 182. Just so you know, is very active and already has hosted a Google Hangout with fans;

Think about using google+ to present great deals of the week in real estate you can have a property on youtube and share it with everyone in the hangout or present photos from picasa. Then discuss it and even have a lender in the hangout to talk about financing.  Remember youtube, picasa and google are all connected.  If you have been putting it off, go right now to get a youtube account and a picasa account for your photos.  Connecting "juice" from the same tree is going to ROCK your SEO!

Why not share google+ with your buyers and sellers and explain how they might use hang outs in their business?  May not need to "go to webinar" for some topics just have people hangout with you. Maybe google will add screen sharing.... who knows.. but for now and informal presentation to get together no matter what business you have can lead to real time connections.

If you need an invitation to google+ just let me know.  I will need your e-mail to send an invitation.

Google+ a great tool and it is free. Think about having an office event where you have your clients bring in their lap tops and get them set up on google+ so you can all "hangout."

Hi Carra, thank you for sharing your experience with Google+, it's all kind of confusing right now, with Google+, Google+1, etc....speaking of that, there is a Google+1 group just started recently here on AR, you might want to check out.

Carra-I just signed up for this today and didn't really know what to think of it.  I'll bookmark your post and follow all of the links as it sounds like this is going to get pretty interesting to learn more about.

Good morning, Carra. I am beginning to like Google+ the more I use it. I have not been able to set aside the time to really learn the ins and outs but I will...

John ~  I will go find the group!  I know that all the social media can be overwhelming.. but google+ is where the action is going to be... just think about the SEO and google!

Bob ~  It takes awhile but then it starts to just be natural... you will have a good time.. great people on there now all helping one another!

Michael~  I really like it.. a whole new set of viewers and people to engage with!

I have not yet received my "invite" from a friend of mine...not feeling the love of Google +!

Posted by Carol Zingone, Global Realtor in Jax Beach, FL - ABR, CRS, CIPS (Berkshire Hathaway Home Services Florida Network Realty) about 9 years ago

I'm with Carol, I have not felt the love yet. All sounds very interesting though.

Posted by Andrea Swiedler, Realtor, Southern Litchfield County CT (Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices New England Properties) about 9 years ago

Ginny~  Being able to have your customers meet you at the hang out to share a great new real estate opportunity is a "Game Changer" to those who will use it!

Carol ~  If you send me your e-mail I will send you an invite.. no worries we will get you in the game!

Andrea ~  google+ is so different from AR or fb... it is a different group of people so the communication is on another level but those that are there now are more than willing to help!  I think it takes a good look at your prospecting plan for new clients and where you want to be an how visible and what you will be sharing.  Like anything else it takes practice... so jump in and watch and see what is going on feeds of people that you would use as a role model.  Share some of their valuable content and off you go!  The free tool gives the agent and opportunity to show clients how to use google+ and then you have them ready to "hangout" with you sharing great deals in your areas of expertise.

I had not thought of a business application for Hangout in real estate, just the social one. But this might work.

Posted by Sandy Acevedo, RE/MAX Masters, Inland Empire Homes for Sale (951-290-8588) about 9 years ago

Sandy  ~  If you contact your current buyers, ask them if they would like to learn about google+ then get them on google+ and have a weekly hang out where you will present for 15 minutes or ?  Information on a deal in the area.. maybe have a lender with you or in the hang out.. creates buzz from the interest of everyone listening.  You might have people wanting to come to your weekly hangouts just to hear abou the deal you are going to present!  Have a presentation on a youtube clip about the house and maybe even financing if doing still photos and you have a great event at no cost.

Wow.. fun to come back after being out in the real world and seeing all your wonderful comments!  So glad to be of help!

I hope we all get circled up on google+

Beau  ~  Great.. we should connect on google+ too!

Susan ~ Thank you ... it was funny I thought oh great I can mute the video.. go figure out how to take a screen shot on my new imac.. then come back and I heard them saying.. oh that must be Carra.. because they could hear something but not see me.

Terrie ~  Learing is a good thing and spending time on google+ is going to be very important..teaching your customers how to use it and then hang out with them I think is going to be a deal changer!

Kathy ~  I think you could have a weekly hang out and invite agents to come.. show them decorating tips.... it could work well because as you can see on the screen shot.. we could see Cleo's entire living room.

John ~  You have reasoned correctly.. start putting your eggs in the google+ basket.. then you can teach your customers and clients how to use it and how they can help their businesses by using it.

Tammy ~  Thank you.  I will go and post in your group!  Great you started a group for google+

Maggie ~  Thank you so much and I sincerely appreciate the feature as I hope it helps people start on the learning curve and know what to expect.

Victoria~ it's still beta testing so google is listening to what people are telling them.. but this IS going to work.  not many people posting what they had for lunch and what their cat is doing.. so the level of engagement is going to be different here.

Jason~  You got it buddy!  We all need to be there.. inviting customers to hang out and learn together!

Richard ~  It's ok.  I think facebook for posts is going to be more personal.. and google+ closer to linkedin but much more user friendly and easier access to real time communication. In 2 minutes this morning I had someone I never knew help me change the setting on the iphone app.  I could not figure out how to change the notifications on my iphone and he even sent me a video of how to change it on the settings online.  The answer was I could not change it on the phone.. had to do it online.  He is now a new hero for me.. go check out my feed and see how cool it was for him to send me  video of what to do to fix my problem.  That has NEVER happened on facebook for me.

Virginia~ yea.. glad we have circled the wagons!  I got the G+ on my website but better add it to AR.. have you heard do they have it yet?    Did you get this post as a message this morning?  I have you in my real estate circle and sent it out as my first test so would love to hear if you got it?

Posted by Carra Riley & Declan Kenyon, Helping people Transition at all ages! (Brokers Guild Cherry Creek Ltd) about 9 years ago

Mike ~  I think fb and twitter will survive.. they have their own identities.. but I think google+ is going to help with the SEO when posting or creating a business page there.

Barbara ~  Happy  you like all the details.. I write the way I learn so step by step.   You sould create a google profile and get a gmail account for e-mail... start getting yourself ranked!

Susan ~ you got it girlfriend!

Brian ~  Yes sir.. get on that wagon!  This is going to be a must!

Erica ~  Guy Kawasaki did a test on the resuts of a post on twitter, fb and google+  He had 435,900 twitter followers, over 45,000 likes on fb and only 10,000 followers on google+  He got answer to his post which was a small contest for a free book between 104 and 98 on all 3 so what that showed was he got as much response from 10,000 google+ followers as 435,900 twitter folloewrs and 45,000 fb fans.  I did a similar test on a question.. took all day to get 4 replies on fb and it took 20 minutes to ge 6 response on google+  It was a simple question about google voice and if anyone was using it.

Anna ~  Welcome back... google+ is like twitter in that you can follow or circle anyone you want it's up to them if they circle you back. I have been keeping them in categories.. like what they do so it takes awhile to look at a profile before I put them in a circle group.  I love putting all the different countries in their own circle!  Global connections baby!

Lora ~ time is a huge problem just to sit down and learn it all!  I hear ya! I have no magic fix for it.. it just takes time!

Robert ~  You have a sound philosophy.. watch and then leap! You are welcome!

Gail~  You should get a gmail account then you will fit in and yes fill out your profile.

Thanks everyone and let's circle up!  I have an AR circle and real estate circle and state circle!  So we will get all the dots connected!

Good information.

The hang out is defiantly a plus and once people get use to it - it will be a game changer as far as business goes.

But... Facebook brought in Skype, so it will be interesting to see what they will do with it.

All in all those that embrace it now - will be way ahead of the curve and everyone else by the way!

Carra,  Bob told me that AR will add the G+ option soon.  In the meantime, my AR outside blog feeds on one of my website pages, so I added the plus button to that page, now my outside blog has the Plus button when it comes up in searches, which is cool.  You can plus it on the search results page, but it is not on my blog.

Did that make any sense at all?  :)

They are also developing another aspect of it to offer "business pages" the way Facebook has done.

The only thing I'm afraid of is that it's not going to be free.  Keeping my fingers crossed that it will be, though. They've said to be sure your profile now is a personal one.  They are deleting profiles that are set up as businesses to use them with the future project.

It's being criticized for not allowing you to have a private profile, and how they are really verifying that the person really exists...no anonymous profiles or multiples either.  So it's being policed a lot more than Facebook in many aspects.  I like that, personally!

If you already have a Google profile, it's going to attach to that.  So whatever you have on there will be visible, including any photos you have in Picasa.  If you have a Blogger blog, the photos on it are stored on Picasa...so if you set about to delete any, be sure you aren't using them.

Look me up and connect too!  And if you need an invite I'll also be glad to oblige.

Jan ~ Mashable had to take down their branding logo today and Jeff put his picture up.. I shared the post.. it was very humble and so the businesses will get in the game after the PEOPLE have their say!  I have a couple of people who work at google in my circles and they are talking directly.. doing surveys.. very cool!  So we can circle up!  That will be fun!  Looking to do a hangout tomorrow with Gene Mundt to practice so watch for us and come and visit.

Paddy ~  Good to hear.. nice to have choices when looking for things.

Gene ~  Yes, this is one you should be an early adaptor on!

Pam ~  I believe it will be very important to the real estate business.

Bill ~  Yes, the 21st century way of prospecting.. sharing your knowledge and people will come to you.

Dale ~  Glad to be of help.. and let's circle up!

Thanks to evevyone and let's trade circles!  We can practice with one another!

I was looking forward to a "Hangout" with my client while I toured a home they were interested, but for some reason that feature isn't enabled on my HTC EVO cell phone even though I have downloaded the Google + app and it runs on the Android (Google) platform.

This sounds interesting and something I will need to check out! I have gone into this slowly so far. I just heard that hundreds possibly thousands of users had their accounts deleted which apparently included all attached features - gmail, adsense, docs, etc.

Really fantastic, Carra!  You are such an early user of this, and really seem to get the hang of it.    I am learning new things every day - love the education in this post!
