Skype Goes Mobile

Skype Goes MobileYou may have heard about Skype before.  It allows you to talk face-to-face with anyone via your computer as long as you both have cameras and a microphone attached to your computer (either built-in or via an add-on).  Skype even offers a pay as you go plan and a monthly credit service that allows you to call landlines both domestically and internationally for low rates via your computer.  But, did you know that Skype now offers Mobile Skype?

With Mobile Skype, you can call any number any time for low rates.  If you are a Verizon user, Skype Mobile is already programmed into the new BlackBerry, Android and other 3G model phones.  It can also be added to some of the older model BlackBerrys, Androids and other 3G phones.  But, if you use another carrier for your mobile phone service, you won't be left out in the dark.

Users of iPhone and iPod can download a simple app from Apple's App Store.  For Android users, you can sign up for a downloadable application via SMS or go to skype.com/m on your Android handset to download it via the Android Market.  For Symbian and Symbian compatible phones, you may also visit the Skype Mobile website on your handset and download the Skype Mobile app there.  Once any of these apps are loaded into your phone, you will be prompted to call the Skype test call, where you will be able to hear the quality of your voice played back for you.  It will also tell you if your phone is configured properly to use the Skype app.

For Real Estate Professionals

Get the Skype app to use Skype on your mobile phone.Skype to Skype calls are absolutely free.  So, whether you call someone via your computer or mobile phone to someone else's Skype number, it doesn't cost you a thing.  You can even set up a conference video call with several people at once on your computer.  This is especially great for those out-of-town real estate clients who need an update from you, the lender or anyone else.  Get all questions answered in one shot and face-to-face.  And, with the Skype Manager, you can set up different accounts, allocate credit to each account, assign different features for each account and monitor the usage on each account.  The credit is automatically converted to whatever the user's local currency is.  This is a great way to keep track of expenses.  As an added bonus, if you act now, anyone who adds Skype Mobile to their mobile phone by December 31st will receive a free 60 minute subscription via email to redeem in January.  How's THAT for a deal?!

You know the benefits of Skype on your computer.  But now that Skype offers Mobile Skype, you can use the convenience of the lower rates on your mobile phone as well without eating into your monthly service plan no matter which wireless carrier you use!

I think that this means that I have now been Skyped.

With Unlimited Minutes on my current cell plan, I never saw the need for Skype or Vonage.

When Verizon no longer offers "Unlimited Plans" (which is rumored to be coming soon), then I will give Skype a look.

Thanks for the Mobile Update, Pamela.

Hi Pam,

Oh thanks so much for the great info. I wouldn't have ever thought about skype on the iPhone.

Hi David - I think being Skyped is a step up from being Googled.  :)

Hi Fred - Skype works both ways - no charge for you OR the person you're calling.  So, with that in mind, you might want to reconsider.

Hi Lynda - I've always said. "We keep up so you don't have to".  But, it's even a challenge for us to keep up.  Technology moves so fast.

Pamela I have to sign up for a Skype Account. Hopefully in 2011 I can start using this more. Thanks for the remainder. Great post.

Hi Lanre - Setting up a Skype account is really simple.  Just go to Skype.com and create an account.  Then, just follow the prompts.

Pamela--Thanks for the reminder to use Skype.  I set up my acct when I bought new computer last year and used it once.  Yes, it is easy to use & need to get back to it.  Call me via Skype if you have questions about my recipe, etc.

Hi Mary - Talking via Skype has one drawback - I have to look presentable.  :)

So true, Pamela.  Maybe that is why I haven't used it.  Have a great day!

Pam-I haven't really had a need for skype yet but my daughter has been using it to talk to a friend in Texas for the past few months.

Hi Debra - It's perfect for talking with out-of-state or out-of-country clients, too.
