The Realtor Pledge, Code of Ethics and the Golden Rule

The Realtor Pledge, Code of Ethics and the Golden Rule.

Did you know the Golden Rule was in the Realtor Pledge

The simple concepts expressed in this document just plain make good ethical sense on every point!

I AM A REALTOR®

I Pledge Myself...

  • To protect the individual right of real estate ownership and widen the opportunity to enjoy it;
  • To be honorable and honest in all dealings;
  • To seek better to represent my clients by building my knowledge and competence;
  • To act fairly towards all in the spirit of the Golden Rule;
  • To serve well my community, and through it my country;
  • To observe the REALTORS® Code of Ethics and conform my conduct to its lofty ideals.

The Golden Rule is embraced by almost every faith group, world wide in differeing ways, however the meaning is the same. "Treat others they way you would want to be treated."

I currently live in the State of Arizona and I am proud to say that we are a "Golden Rule State." The senate passed a Resolution in May of 2003 declaring the State of Arizona a Golden Rule State.

The State of Arizona sells Golden Rule License plates.   Part of the funds from the license plate sales go to educate the community about the Golden Rule.  There is a beautiful video going at the movies in Flagstaff, Arizona about living the Golden Rule with children from all over the world talking about their culture and the Golden Rule.

The city of Flagstaff, Arizona passed a resolution making Flagstaff a Golden Rule City in the Golden Rule State of Arizona in November of 2008.

The Realtor Pledge incorporates the Golden Rule and so does the Code of Ethics shouing the value placed on this ethical behavior.

Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS ®
Duties to Clients and Customers
Duties to the Public
Duties to REALTORS®

Where the word REALTORS® is used in this Code and Preamble, it shall be deemed to include REALTOR-ASSOCIATE®s.

While the Code of Ethics establishes obligations that may be higher than those mandated by law, in any instance where the Code of Ethics and the law conflict, the obligations of the law must take precedence.

Preamble
Under all is the land. Upon its wise utilization and widely allocated ownership depend the survival and growth of free institutions and of our civilization. REALTORS® should recognize that the interests of the nation and its citizens require the highest and best use of the land and the widest distribution of land ownership...........

In the interpretation of this obligation, REALTORS® can take no safer guide than that which has been handed down through the centuries, embodied in the Golden Rule, "Whatsoever ye would that others should do to you, do ye even so to them."

Accepting this standard as their own, REALTORS® pledge to observe its spirit in all of their activities whether conducted personally, through associates or others, or via technological means, and to conduct their business in accordance with the tenets set forth below. (Amended 1/07)

In this time of economic change there seems to be an opportunity to help live the Golden Rule.

A friend of mine recently moved from Tuscon, Arizona to Ft. Myers, Florida and she is there helping the homeless and the women veterans from Iraq with a group called Sisters of Service.  She is also helping the community with a Golden Rule website www.GoldenRuleFtMyers.com  This website is the 21st century way of helping mankind.  Anyone interested in READING about the needs of the Ft. Myers, Florida community can subscribe by being a "helper" to get a weekly e-mail list of needs that have been gathered throughout the week. After reading the list of needs and deciding the "helper" can offer assistance, the helper contacts the coordinator via e-mail and sets a time to connect. Some of the needs which have been filled in the past were requests for: crutches, shower curtains, bike lights, tents, computers, furniture and the list goes on with very easy needs to fill. A "Helper" may have the items needed by an individual in their garage, basement or spare room so helping someone can be as easy as reading an e-mail and responding.

Living the Golden Rule in 2010 is easy by helping when you can with small steps of kindness.

If you are in the Ft. Myers, Florida area and are willing to help with the Golden Rule project you             can e-mail  and let the group coordinator know! There are also beta test programs in Colorado, Arizona and Hawaii if you would like to help or get information about setting up a Golden Rule program in your area.

As the new year gets underway and the planning for helping others unfolds it is great to remember the Golden Rule and the ethic of Reciprocity in all actions.  The CRS twitter page @crsconnect  had a great link to Golden Rule actions in Social Media.

Revisiting 10 Golden Rules of Social media

Make 2010 the year of living the Golden Rule who knows, it could help with world peace!

Carra,

I learned a lot of new things in your post.  I love the Golden Rule.  I didn't realize it was adopted by Arizona and Flagstaff.  That's very cool.  I love that they use it for community education of the golden rule.

Also, I had no idea about this group in Ft. Myers.  I just passed some stuff in the basement that could use a new home.  I will check out if any of it matches their needs.

Excellent info shared:-)

All the best, Michelle

Michelle,

I am so happy that you liked the post!  The concept for the Golden Rule websites has been in beta testing for over two years. The idea was for local Real Estate boards to shine showing the community how Realtors can pitch in and care while participating in a Golden Rule project for each individual city. The project has to be a collaboration in the entire COMMUNITY for it to work.. but the frame work is set up to go and could easily be initiated across the country.. It is so simple to implement in any community.... it is all by e-mail on the Internet through a website... There does have to be a coordinator, that is the very most important aspect... it could be a senior who can use e-mail......Distribution of the items in need could be through a community agency already set up. This is how simple it is...  someone in need registers a need (this can be done through community service agencies for the homeless, battered women shelters etc).. and helpers read the needs... if you can help...the coordinator sets it up!

Having at least 100 Helpers registered is another important part of the project before asking for needs... You can always find people in need but you MUST have the Helpers set up so they can read the needs when they are posted.

So Michell, if you have a group of individuals in Atlanta, GA who want to set a Golden Rule project up.. I am more than willing to help!  All the groundwork is done!

Hope I didn't scare you off!  Just wanted to share how a community could help one another for little or no cost re-cycling what they have!

You know Carra- if everyone would just pledge to live in a manner that didn't hurt and did help others our country would be such a better place.  It saddens me when I see people who are so obviously looking out for ONLY themselves to the detriment of others and it's becoming the rule and not the exception so often.  I love the idea of the license plates with the money going to education.

Tammy,

I sincerely appreciate your comments and perspective!  It really is a simple concept.. "treat others the way you would want to be treated".... To me that is every action being sincere with no other agenda like you mentioned not just looking out for #1.  It is so hard to figure things out when there is a hidden agenda.

This is a great reminder to all of us Realtors here on Active Rain. I grew up in a strong southern baptist family. My grandfather is a baptist preacher. Needless to say, the golden rule was preached often!

"treat others the way you would want to be treated" This sums it up pretty simply!  Great connecetion to the Code of Ethics and the groups out there helping to make this world a better place. I had no idea Flagstaff had created this - very cool indeed.

Hi, Carra. There's no better place for "The Golden Rule" than in the profession of real estate, when there are so many participants to consider, each with their own needs and their own agenda.

If you follow the Golden Rule and things go badly, you can at least take comfort in knowing that you did your best.

Posted by Leslie Helm, Real Estate For Trail Riders (Tennessee Recreational Properties) about 9 years ago

Christopher,  How great to have a real sense of connection to the Golden Rule.. it really is just a moral principle... and it is wonderful that the Realtor organization so whole heartily embraces it as a role model of behavior for the Realtor organization.

Anna, www.GoldenRulePhoenix.com and www.GoldenRuleArizona.comis all set up!  It was beta tested and ready to go if there is a group of community members who want to get together and make it happen.  In Havasu we had bankers, social service agencies, fire department, Title companies... all on a steering committee.  Let me know if you would like more info!

Leslie,

I think you wrote something very important!  "There's no better place for "The Golden Rule" than in the profession of real estate"  I loved your comment about trying to live the Golden Rule....If everyone gets up in the morning and says... "I am going to be the best person I can possibly be"... then you have to just take a step back and KNOW.. everyone is trying the best they can!  Thanks Leslie!

Carra~  How do you find out if your state is a Golden Rule state?  I would love to know if Colorado is.  That is something to be proud of, living in a Golden Rule state and city.  It's been awhile since I have read the preamble.  Thanks for a fabulous post!  BTW I love the look of the license plate.

Posted by Dawn A Fabiszak, The Dawn of a New Real Estate Experience! (Private Label Realty ( Denver metro area, Colorado) about 9 years ago

Dawn,

I am thinking that Colorado is NOT a Golden Rule State.. but all it takes is some individuals wanting to bring the idea to the Senate and it can go through as Arizona has paved the way.  Check out the link above on the State Resolution.. make a copy of that and contact your Senator... and present the idea.. I would think in this time of need that our entire country would want to be thinking about how we help each other... There is a Colorado Beta Test Golden Rule program set up.. www.GoldenRuleWestinster.com  all you need is to get a few community members, banker, title company... fire department,  Realtors... , Social service agencies.. and set up a steering committee... all the set up ideas are on the Flagstaff link above.. Let me know if I can be of any further help!  Dawn, thanks for your interest!

Carra, it's something that should be included in the curriculum and taught to kids at an early age, unless somebody points out that it's not politically correct for some ridiculous reason. There is no good reason to do anything to hurt some. Interesting post.

Posted by Ed Silva, Central CT Real Estate Broker Serving all equally (RE/MAX Professionals, CT 203-206-0754 ) about 9 years ago

Ed,

You bring up a good point about being "politically correct."  If you click the link above on the Golden Rule hypertext it takes you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethic_of_reciprocity which shows how the Golden Rule really is an ethical principle based on reciprocity.  It took the State of Arizona four years to pass this Resolution and they finally agreed it was an "ethical principle" found in all faiths just presented in different formats.  I will see if I can get a copy of the video from AIFM and post it showing the kids from all over the world sharing the Golden Rule... it is very heartwarming!

Leslie,

Most people I talk to from Arizona do NOT know that either.. so you are not alone... I think they should take this idea and encourage people to come out and start volunteering where city and county services are being cut... it seems like the perfect mix and time for people to come together and help one another!  Nice to meet you!  Do you come to the WCR meetings in Flagstaff?  I am going on Wednesday.

Hi Carra,

Really great stuff! I really did not realize that the Golden Rule was in our Realtor Pledge, but I am thankful that it is. Further, what interesting stuff about Flag? I had no idea, but you know, I always feel so warm and fuzzy when I leave Flag, despite the cold! Thanks for sharing!

Posted by Jessica Steele (Welcome Home Realty) about 9 years ago

Tim ~  I love your words.. "perfect standard"  I agree with you!  It all evolves one person at a time living the concept to the best of their ability!

Jessica ~ You are not alone.. many agents say that pledge one time in their career and that is it!  I actually had it in my pre-listing book I would leave with a seller so they could look at before I went on a 2nd listing appointment... Now it could be included on a 2.0 website and important information to review for a buyer or a seller.

Carra ~ I subscribe to the Golden Rule in every aspect of my life, and I make sure that my agents subscribe to it as well (it's a prerequisite for working at Real Estate Cafe!).  While my State doesn't have the "Golden Rule" Seal, it's citizens are kind-natured and very helpful to others.  Perhaps Oregon could win the Honorary "Golden Rule" Award.  I rarely ever re-blog another's post, but I feel so strongly about this topic, that here goes!  Thanks for sharing Carra!

Melinda,

I am speechless and happy that you want to share the post, honored is a better word.  I feel that the Real Estate industry should let buyers and sellers know that we are really part of the Realtor community which abides by the Golden Rule.

For some of us, it just comes natural; in part because of the way we were raised (Hardworking, law abiding, stable and caring parents).  Born Country!!

Posted by Marilyn Harrell, Wixom Lake - Beaverton MI (ReMax Riverhaven) about 9 years ago

Carra,

In Ontario we have two Codes of Ethics. The first is under the Act, and there is no reference to the Golden Rule.

For those who join organized real estate, the Canadian Real Estate Association has its own Code, and the Golden Rule is there on the first page.

I recall a time, maybe 6 years ago on another discussion board, a mortgage broker scoffed at my mention of following the Code of Ethics. She said a REALTOR is no different than a regular real estate agent. We went around and around. Then, out of the blue, last fall, this same mortgage broker contacted me about buying a home in Sacramento. She lived elsewhere. We entered escrow. And she apologized because she finally realized that many agents do care about the Code of Ethics.

I was reading in Luke in the Bible this morning and came across the parable, something of lost money and we take and turn the house upside down and sweep the floor and when it is found we have a celebration, inviting people in on it.  We are all lost puppies without the Golden Rule to serve Justice in how we at once, will be so judged of ourselves, how we did it with others.

Before getting into real estate, we both were heavily into customer service. One thing we learned is that the Golden Rule is a good starting point, but service can, and should, be so much more. We were taught to take service to the next level with the Platinum Rule: "Treat others like THEY want  to be treated". Recently, we found another rule, the Double Platinum Rule: "Treat people like they don't realize they want to be treated". Each rule focuses on different things, different levels of service. Personally, I think real estate is better served by the Platinum Rule, since we're all about giving our clients what they want. A lot of agents think they're practicing the Golden Rule in their business, but are actually using one of the other two rules without realizing it!

The sad thing is there are some who live by the Tin-Plated Rule: "Treat people like they know nothing and you're better than they are". Unfortunately, just when you thought they were extinct, you find one at the worst possible time. We happen to be working a transaction with one now...

Great post, and a timely one, I'm looking forward to reading more comments!

Good Morning... what a surprise! How fun it is to see everyone celebrating and sharing the Golden Rule!

Mary ~ the Realtor Pledge and the Code of Ethics as always been one of the first documents I share with a buyer or a seller.  It speaks for itself. We could talk about this on your blogtalkradio show March 4th at 9:00 a.m. MST.

Rob ~ All we can do is be the best we can be.. I think people really do think that when they get up in the morning they want to do the right thing but sometimes fall off the wagon by at 10...LOL

Christine~  Great class... love your last name.. my daughters name is Shae.

Melissa ~ You are not alone... most of us say the pledge when we get installed as a Realtor.. and that is it..... so glad you have an ah ha moment and can now share with others... that is how we change the world... one person at a time.

Brian ~ The Golden Rule is the basis for all kindness in ALL situations.. putting our feet in the other persons shoes and treating them the way we would want to be treated!

Mark ~  I am surprised that more states do not embrace this concept.

Jenna ~ I think we have all experienced that version of the Golden Rule too!

Lisa ~ thank you so much for the re-blog!  Getting the word out to the "people" that Realtors embrace the Golden Rule is a GREAT way to help in this changing economy.  How close are you to Ft. Myers?

Lee and Pamela ~ Where will you be coming in AZ?  glad to share!

Pat and Wayne ~  3 great Golden Rule ideas!  Thanks for sharing will put them to use... The Tin rule is making me laugh!

Sheldon ~ This is a rule you know and live by!  You are always so kind in your posts and comments... thanks Sheldon.. Cheers to you too!

Ron and Alexandra ~ Funny you should mention the Flagstaff info... my husband and I worked on getting the resolution passed.. so would be happy to help anyone wanting to do the same!

Michelle ~ Wonderful for you to bring the Golden Rule into business too.  I know several successful business owners who had the Golden Rule at the top of their behavior list!

Scott ~ Many Realtors just say the pledge when they get their pin and that is the end of it... Now it can be part of sharing with everyone as part of how Realtors do business.

Have a great weekend!

What a yummy post.....Carra mio my

When the transaction is over and people tell the story on how well things went because of you having had something to do with it, this treasured statement is coveted more than anything else and is not to be found on earth for purchase, but to be earned here on earth by doing. It gets better when you find out that you are getting paid to do something you love. Teachers boast of stories of students coming back after years gone by to thank them for a job well done and for touching their lives. Agents.....Is it not the same for us for helping someone through the largest transaction of their lives? Oh may God give me a few thousand of these before I leave.
